The Meditation Student Organization (MSO) is a peer-led group offering students, faculty, and staff at the University of Illinois an open and non-judgmental space to practice meditation. The founders of the group are graduate students who hope to maintain and strengthen our own meditation practice, while at the same time making meditation more accessible to the campus community. Whether you are seeking a space to deepen your spiritual practice or you are simply curious about meditation, all are welcome. There is no need to have any meditation experience to attend the group. We invite you to begin where you are.
UIUC Undergraduate Students, Graduate Students, Faculty and Staff. All are welcome to attend.
A meditation session with tea and discussion after.
During the fall of 2016 we will meet every Tuesday from 5:30-6:30pm.
We each share the desire to offer access to the meditation practice in our academic community. This is the heart of the MSO.
Do I have to take off my shoes?
You may find it more comfortable to take off your shoes when using a cushion, but it is not required.
Do I need to wear certain clothing?
Nope. Wear whatever works for you. If you prefer to sit on a cushion or mat comfortable clothes may be more pleasant.
Do I need to bring something to sit on?
Chairs and meditation cushions will be available; however, feel free to bring a mat, blocks, or other items that will help make your meditation practice comfortable.
Do I have to go to the meditation instruction?
We encourage individuals who have had no prior meditation experience to attend but the meditation instruction is optional. We simply offer instruction as a courtesy to all participants who are interested.
Do I have to sit the whole time?
Beginning late or leaving early is perfectly okay. We want to be flexible to your schedule. Nonetheless, we prefer that participants come and go quietly and respectfully in order to minimize distraction. During silent meditation a bell will ring at 6:50pm and 7:00pm to offer participants structured space to enter or leave the room.
Where can I park?
Nearby meter and campus parking is free at this time of day. There is a UIUC lot behind Davenport Hall or street parking.
What bus should I take?
The closest MTD bus stop is at Goodwin and Nevada. Please visit www.cumtd.com to find out which line best suits your needs.
Can I keep my cell phone close by?
Yes, you may keep your cell phone in your bag or near you when you are meditating. Please be conscientious of those who are practicing meditation by making sure it is in silent mode or off.
